Patient Resources

Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of internal structures producing images on a monitor. The Registered Medical Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) is an Ultrasonographer, who is skilled in the use of ultrasound equipment, performs the procedure while a Radiologist, a physician specializing in medical diagnosis using ultrasound images, interprets the results.

All SJMHS Ultrasound locations are accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Our highly skilled and professional Ultrasonographers work collaboratively with the Radiologist to ensure an accurate and comprehensive diagnosis for our patients.

What paperwork should I bring with me?
    • The physician order with your physician’s signature
    • Personal Identification (Driver’s license, State ID, etc.)
    • Medical Insurance cards

Please check with your insurance company prior to your appointment to verify if your procedure will be covered.

Are Ultrasound procedures safe?
An ultrasound procedure should be painless and uses no radiation. There are no known side effects from ultrasound.

Can I bring a friend or relative into the Ultrasound procedure room with me? 
Visitors are not allowed in the procedure room with the exception of those patients that have special needs, require an interpreter, pediatric patients or an obstetrical (OB) patient. OB patients are asked to limit their guests to no more than two visitors. Children under the age of twelve will require an additional adult supervisor.

How do I prepare for my procedure?
Please follow the procedure preparation instructions given to you at the time your procedure was scheduled. Each procedure is different. If you are unclear of your preparation, please contact your ordering physician to inquire. Discuss any questions you may have regarding your procedure with your physician. Some procedures allow you to eat or drink prior, for others you must drink fluid and have a full bladder.

Can I take my medications?
You may take your medications the morning of your appointment with a small amount of water unless you are instructed otherwise. For some procedures, additional instructions will be given at the time of scheduling your procedure.

If you are having a biopsy, bring a list of all your medications with you to your appointment. Biopsy patients will be instructed prior to their appointment on which medications to stop taking, if any. If you are taking a blood thinner medication, please contact your physician.

How should I dress for my procedure?
Please dress in loose fitting clothing. Generally, two-piece outfits that break at the waist (shirt/pants) are easiest for performing most ultrasound procedures. Leave all valuable personal items at home the day of your ultrasound procedure.

What should I expect when I arrive at the Ultrasound department? 
You will check in with the person at the desk and present your physician order. For OB and biopsy patients, you will be asked to fill out a patient questionnaire. Once you are checked-in, you will be called from the waiting room and taken back to the department. Patients are not necessarily seen in the order in which they arrive.

What should I expect during my Ultrasound procedure? 
You will be taken to the procedure room by a sonographer. The sonographer may ask some routine questions that will be helpful to the radiologist in making a diagnosis. If you have any questions, please ask the sonographer at this time.

Most procedures are performed lying on a soft exam table. The sonographer will apply a warm gel on the skin of the area being examined. The sonographer will hold an instrument called a transducer in their hand and press it gently over the area being scanned. You may be asked to take a breath and hold it. This may last approximately 10 seconds or less. You may be asked to roll or move into different positions during the procedure.

Pelvic Ultrasounds include additional imaging that may require a transvaginal probe being placed into the vagina. Transvaginal Ultrasounds are only performed on consenting females.

What should I expect after my Ultrasound Procedure? 
After the sonographer has finished the scan, the gel will be removed from your skin with a dry towel. The sonographer will have you wait in the exam room while they check that your images have transferred to our computer system prior to you leaving. This could take up to 30 minutes. Do not be alarmed if additional images are required; this is for your benefit and quality of care. A radiologist will interpret the images and a report will go to the doctor who ordered your procedure.

How long will the Ultrasound procedure take? 
Most Ultrasound procedures take approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete. Please plan on approximately one hour in the Radiology department for a routine Ultrasound procedure. Some procedures (e.g. biopsies, obstetrics) may take longer to perform.

When can I resume normal activities after the procedure?
After most general routine ultrasounds, you will be able to immediately resume normal activities. If your procedure included a biopsy, you will be given instructions afterward on when you can resume your normal activities.

When will I receive my results? 
A radiologist will interpret the images and a report will be sent to the physician who ordered your procedure. Please follow up with your physician’s office on when and how you will receive the results of your ultrasound procedure.

You may also gain access to your results utilizing the SJMHS Patient Portal (must be previously registered to utilize).   

How do I obtain a copy of my report or images?
To obtain a copy of your report or images, please contact the Imaging Results Center (IRC) at 734-712-RADS (7237) or fill out an online request for imaging results.  Note:  The IRC requires 24 business hour notice to fulfill your request.  You will be able to pick up your material at the location you specified and will be required to present a photo ID and sign a release at the time of pickup.
