Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission is dedicated to continuously improving the safety and quality of the nation’s health care through voluntary accreditation. The Joint Commission’s unannounced, on-site survey of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital occurred in October 2013, with formal Accreditation awarded shortly thereafter in February 2014.
“We are extremely proud of our entire staff, medical staff and volunteers for their continued dedication to patient care and safety…every patient…every time,” Smith concludes. “Meeting the strict standards set forth by The Joint Commission in attaining Accreditation is just one more example of that dedication and our culture of excellence.”
The Joint Commission’s hospital standards address important functions relating to the care of patients and the management of hospitals. The standards are developed in consultation with health care experts, providers, measurement experts and patients. The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits more than 18,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States.
The Gold Seal of Approval was awarded just a few months after SJMPH was also named Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission. As a Top Performer, St. Joseph Mercy was recognized for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions, and is one of 1,099 hospitals in the US earning the distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance.
