Art Exhibit Honors Cancer Patients & Survivors at St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron
Start Date
Port Huron, MI…St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron and the Mercy Regional Cancer Center are pleased to host Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey, an art exhibit honoring the physical and emotional journeys people face when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. This free, public exhibit tours communities nationwide and will showcase 25 selected pieces of art.

In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November, Lilly Oncology on Canvas will be on display during regular business hours, beginning Friday, November 12 through Thursday, November 18, 2010, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, located at 2601 Electric Avenue, in Port Huron.

Launched in 2004, Oncology on Canvas is a biennial art competition that invites people from the U.S. and Puerto Rico diagnosed with any type of cancer, as well as their families, friends, caregivers and health care providers, to express through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give the cancer journey meaning. The traveling exhibition is touring throughout 2010. Lilly on Canvas is presented by Lilly USA, LLC in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS), the oldest survivor-led cancer advocacy organization in the U.S.

“We’re excited to offer this beautiful exhibit to the local community,” comments Brenda Miller, RN, Oncology Nurse Navigator for the Mercy Regional Cancer Center and coordinator of the exhibit. “November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and – according to the American Cancer Society – lung cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in the United States and is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women.

“The exhibit is the perfect opportunity to draw attention to the effects of cancer, including the celebration of cancer survivorship; the need to live healthful lifestyles; and the importance of understanding cancer risk factors and participate in cancer screening,” Miller continues. “The Mercy Regional Cancer Center offers the most comprehensive cancer program within St. Clair County and the eastern Thumb region. It is not by accident that the exhibit ends during the Great American Smoke Out, scheduled for Thursday, November 18, 2010.”

The community, especially cancer patients, survivors, friends, family, caregivers and health care professionals are invited to tour the free exhibit throughout the week. The exhibit will begin in the hospital’s main lobby and will be displayed throughout the main corridor and in the Baggot Street Café (cafeteria).
