For Men Only...Prostate Cancer Education and Screening Event Planned
Port Huron, MI… September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron and its Mercy Regional Cancer Center are pleased to offer a prostate cancer screening and community education event. The program titled, “For Men Only, but Women Are Invited,” is designed to offer community residents information about health issues that effect the male prostate, especially cancer.
This event features Robert Camara, DO, a family practice physician, with Mercy Family Care-Marysville, who will provide a special presentation directly to men. The event is free and includes refreshments and giveaways. Free PSA blood screening tests will be performed on site.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cancer killer among men, with over 192,000 new cases last year. The disease is more prevalent among African-American men, and men over 40. Early detection is key in beating the disease. These lifesaving screenings take only about a minute, and most men find them painless. Any male can be tested.
There are virtually no symptoms in the early stages of prostate cancer, so testing is the best way to detect it, and the best way to obtain a favorable result. The later signs of prostate cancer include symptoms such as: frequent urinating, problems urinating, weak flow, pain or burning urination, painful ejaculation, blood in urine or semen, pain or stiffness in lower back, hips or thighs; nausea, weight loss, and fatigue.
Although this is a men’s only event, their significant women are also invited to attend and participate in a special educational offering on understanding cancer screenings for men and men’s health issues. This is a discrete and effective way for women to become involved in their partner’s health issues and concerns as they relate to cancer.
The Mercy Regional Cancer Center Prostate Cancer Screening event will be held Wednesday, September 1, from 5 to 6:30 pm, at the Mercy Health Center, 4190 24th Avenue, in Fort Gratiot (located just south of Lowe’s). To register, please call 1-888-MERCYME (1-888-637-2963). To learn more about prostate cancer, screening information and guidelines, please visit St. Joseph Mercy Hospital online at mymercy.us.
