America’s Top 50 Cities for Hospital Care
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Named Distinguished Hospital For Clinical Excellence
St. Joe’s Named in National Ratings Organization’s First-Ever List of America’s Top 50 Cities for Hospital Care
Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) was named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence ™ in HealthGrades’ first-ever list of America’s Top 50 Cities for Hospital Care. HealthGrades is the nation’s leading independent health care ratings organization.
Along with its sister hospital, St. Mary Mercy Livonia, SJMO was included in the list which named Detroit a Top 50 city for hospital care. The clinical excellence designation follows SJMO’s recognition as one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals as determined by Thomson Reuters and its recent accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.
“We are proud to add this honor to our list of achievements in the areas of quality patient care and service,” said Jack Weiner, SJMO President and CEO. “This recognition is testament to our ongoing commitment to provide the highest level of care to the community.”
The Top 50 Cities for Hospital Care list was based on an analysis of risk-adjusted patient mortality and complication rates at almost 5,000 hospitals nationwide. As part of its ninth annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study, HealthGrades identified Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical excellence—hospitals performing in the top 5 percent nationwide for 26 medical procedures and diagnoses—then ranked cities by highest percentage of these hospitals. The analysis was based on data for more than 40 million Medicare patient discharges between 2007 and 2009.
Other key study findings include:
Top-rated hospitals outperformed all other hospitals across all 17 mortality cohorts and six of nine complication cohorts studied.
Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence had a 29.82 percent lower risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality rate and a 1.91 percent lower risk-adjusted in-hospital complication rate among Medicare beneficiaries compared to all other hospitals.
If all hospitals performed at the level of the Distinguished Hospitals, 158,684 Medicare lives could potentially have been saved and 3,511 Medicare in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided.
In a survey of nearly 15,000 visitors to HealthGrades.com that was included in the quality and clinical excellence study, 83.4 percent of consumers are very or somewhat concerned about hospital quality in their communities, and almost all of the patients surveyed, 93.8 percent, reported being willing to go out of their way (drive further, reschedule appointments) to seek care at a more highly rated hospital. The majority of health care consumers surveyed also said they would be willing to pay more out of pocket to seek care at a top-rated hospital.
