Safety & Security

While at St. Mary Mercy Hospital, we will do everything we can to provide you with a safe, secure environment. You can help us by taking several precautions:

  • wearing non-skid footwear
  • using bed side rails if recommended by your nurse
  • calling for assistance whenever needed
  • not smoking on hospital premises.

Personal Belongings

We request you send all your personal belongings home for safekeeping. Only retain those items necessary for your personal care. Many treatment plans require patients to transfer to other rooms, and sending your personal items home eliminates the chance of them getting lost.

If this is not possible, nursing personnel will arrange for storage in the hospital safe. Please ask for the return of these items upon discharge. St. Mary Mercy Hospital does not assume responsibility for any valuables you keep in your room, including personal items such as glasses, contact lenses, dentures and hearing aids. You may request a labeled storage container for these items.

Lost and Found

To report lost items or to retrieve items found, call ext. 1279. The hospital is not responsible for the loss of personal belongings; however, every effort is made to return found items to their rightful owners.

Electrical Appliances

For safety reasons, personal items with an electrical cord are not allowed in your hospital room (such as personal electric appliances, hair dryers and curling irons). In addition, laptop computers and battery powered TVs are also not permitted in patient rooms. However, rechargeable battery-operated appliances are permitted as long as they aren't recharged in the hospital. Any plug in medical devices must be screened by the hospital prior to use. Please call ext. 8600 in such instances.

Smoking Policy

St. Mary Mercy Hospital is a smoke-free facility. In the interest of better health and in accordance with Michigan law, smoking is not permitted anywhere on the hospital campus, including all areas of the building and hospital grounds.

If sudden smoking cessation concerns you during your hospital stay, please discuss it with your doctor. Smoking Cessation classes are offered at St. Mary Mercy.

Fire Drills

For your protection, St. Mary Mercy Hospital conducts fire and disaster drills regularly. If a drill occurs while you are here, please remain in your room and do not become alarmed. Nursing personnel will keep you informed.

You will be asked to use a wheelchair or cart during transport from one area of the hospital to another. Getting in and out of them without assistance can be hazardous. Please ask hospital staff for assistance.
