Chelsea Community Hospital’s 28th annual Spring Auction, “Pirate’s Cove,” raised over $324,000 – a record amount – to support the purchase of a linear accelerator as part of the Cancer Center project. This year’s auction was chaired by Randy Hermann and Jona Gill, MD, and co-chaired by Paul and Pat Cousins.

The Auction was held on Saturday, May 11, at the UA 190 – IBEW 252 Hall, 7920 Jackson Road. The popular event included favorites like the silent auction, super raffle, 52-card raffle, and live auction conducted by Auctioneer Steve Gross.

Another record amount, $87,000, was raised during the “Pause for Pledge” portion of the exciting live auction. During the "Pause," enthusiastic participants raised their paddles, making pledges that surpassed the “Gift Challenge” amount of $25,000 - meaning their gifts were matched by sponsor Huron River Radiation Oncology Specialists, and then matched again by a loyal donor, whose generous act made history.

“I’m thrilled to announce that for the first time at the Auction, we have an anonymous donor who has generously agreed to match the “Gift Challenge” pledge made by my group, Huron River Radiation Oncology Specialists. For example, with a pledge of $1,000 to the Cancer program, our pledge is doubled to $2,000 – for a total pledge amount of $3,000! So each contribution will be matched twice over,” said Walter Sahijdak, MD, SJMHS Medical Director of Radiation Oncology, who spoke about the beneficiaries and thanked auction supporters.

Guests made the night memorable with costumes including a mermaid, popular movie characters like Buttercup and Westley from The Princess Bride, and several takes on Captain Jack Sparrow from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film series, as well as shipwrecked castaways, swashbucklers, fair maidens and even a few baseball fans in Pittsburgh Pirates gear. The positive energy and a shared commitment to this important cause made for an evening filled with fun, friendship and generosity.

“The Auction is an inspiring event that reflects the dedication of our donors, committee members, volunteers and staff,” said Judy Stratman, CCH Director of Marketing and Development. “Thank you to everyone who had a part in this year’s success. Your gifts will go a long way in making cancer care better for patients and families and the communities we serve.”

"It's wonderful to see the outpouring of support from our communities at the Auction each year," said Nancy Graebner, President and CEO of CCH. "We are grateful for the incredible generosity shown by our sponsors, guests, and volunteers who made this event so successful. The linear accelerator is a crucial part of our upcoming Cancer Center, and we look forward to providing this important service, close to home."
