Patients Rank Their Care at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Among the Top 3 Percent Nationally
St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea ranked in the top 3 percent nationally for patient satisfaction in outpatient surgery, according to independent healthcare research organization Press Ganey.
In surveys covering hospital visits from April through June 2008, Outpatient services ranked in the top 4 percent, as did the ER; Inpatient services ranked in the top 6 percent.
Press Ganey measures patient satisfaction in outpatient services, outpatient surgery, inpatient services, and emergency services.
Hospital Quality Information at Your Fingertips
A website created by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services called Hospital Compare (www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov) provides consumers with data on a variety of quality measures, including a patient satisfaction survey and specific care procedures.
In a patient survey called HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems), patients were asked whether they would recommend the hospital where they received care to friends and family, and how they would rate the hospital overall.
St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea is among the top 2 percent of hospitals in Michigan for patients who said they would definitely recommend the hospital to friends and family. Eighty percent of patients rated Chelsea a "9" or "10" out of 10, which also places it in the top 2 percent of hospitals in Michigan.
The patient survey asked several other questions, which are listed on the Web site. Compared with other hospitals, St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea:
- Scored in the top 25 percent of hospitals in the state and nation in all 10 categories
- Fared better than all other hospitals in Jackson and Washtenaw counties
- Scored in the top 2 percent of all Michigan hospitals for overall rating of the hospital and recommendation of the hospital to friends and family
In addition to the patient survey results, Hospital Compare posts data about how well a hospital follows certain procedures that are proven to provide the best results for patients.
CMS has posted information on specific process of care and outcome of care measures for Acute Myocardial Infarction (heart attack), Heart Failure, and Pneumonia on the Hospital Compare website. CCH continues to also do well in these categories, ranking in the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation on most of the measures.
